Artà lies in the northeast of Mallorca, a medieval town of around 7,500 inhabitants with one of the most beautiful old towns on the island. Honey-coloured natural stone houses, narrow lanes, church squares, and above it all the medieval Santuari de Sant Salvador - a former fortress that has overlooked the town for centuries. The position is in the middle of the historic centre, within walking distance of the Plaça del Conqueridor and the old-town lanes. In a few minutes on foot you reach the weekly market, held every Tuesday from 8 to 14h on the Plaça del Conqueridor - one of the most lively markets in the northeast. Cafés, tapas bars, boutiques, galleries, and restaurants such as Café Parisien and Restaurant Es Cantó are dotted in the surrounding old-town lanes. Bakeries, pharmacies, banks, and supermarkets are also within walking distance. Families will find several public schools (CEIP and IES), kindergartens, and a health centre here. In Manacor (15 minutes) there is the nearest hospital, the Rafa Nadal Academy, and its associated international school. The surroundings are diverse: the Bronze Age talayot site of Ses Païsses is on the edge of town, the Santuari de Sant Salvador a few minutes' walk above. The long, wild beaches of the northeast - Cala Torta, Cala Mitjana, Cala Agulla, and Cala Mesquida - are 15 to 20 minutes by car.
