Campos is one of those places on Mallorca that is unjustly overlooked. A farming town in the agricultural heart of the south, founded around 1300 by Jaume II, with a medieval core in which sandstone manor houses line narrow lanes, and where seven old 16th-century defence towers still stand scattered through the townscape. If you live here, you live in the middle of it, not at the edge. The day starts in the neighbourhood. At Panadería Pomar, traditional Mallorcan bread, ensaimadas and coca are ready in the morning, a few minutes on foot from your own front door. The Iglesia Sant Julià with its landmark bell tower and Murillo painting inside is just as close, and behind it the Plaça Major opens as the everyday stage of the town - neighbours meeting, someone stopping for a coffee, life at its own quiet pace. Twice a week the centre transforms. On Thursday and Saturday from nine to two, the weekly market runs from Carrer de Sa Creu through the lanes up to Plaça Major - fruit, vegetables, sobrasada, cheese, olive oil, wine, crafts. The walk there is short, breakfast at one of the surrounding café terraces turns it into a slow morning. For the bigger weekly shop, Mercadona on Camí Vell de Ciutat and Eroski on Carrer de Nunyo Sanç are a few minutes by car, plus Lidl and Aldi. For daily life, everything is in the village. The Centre de Salut Xaloc with 24-hour PAC covers medical basics, plus pharmacies, post office, bank, garages, several kindergartens and the public primary school. Secondary schools also in Campos, international schools in Palma are about 40 minutes by car. The sea is a few minutes by car. Es Trenc, one of the island's last natural sand beaches, is fifteen minutes away - almost your beach alone in winter, at its best early in the morning or late in the afternoon in summer. Colònia de Sant Jordi with its harbour and view of Cabrera is just as close, Sa Ràpita with its marina ten minutes. Cala Llombards, Cala S'Almunia and the bays of the southern tip are within easy reach by car. In the evening, the town opens up. Molí de Sal at the edge of town is known for grill and meat dishes, in the centre smaller restaurants, wine bars and cafés sit with street terraces. For a fish menu right by the water, a jump to Sa Ràpita to S'Amarador or to the Colonia is worth it. And for a classic sundowner, ten minutes to Cassai Sunset Club in Colònia de Sant Jordi. Palma is around 40 minutes away, the airport about 30. A location where you live in the middle of the town's own history - with the sea within reach and the short paths of country life.
